Premium Organic Coffee from Gedeo Zone, Ethiopia
These coffee beans were brought to the US as part of the Single Producer Project developed between Royal Coffee, our importer, and the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). Grown by one farmer and naturally processed as a separate lot at the Worka Cooperative in Southern Ethiopia, this coffee has quickly become a fan favorite.
The Coffee Industry in Gedeo Zone, Ethiopia
Coffee production in the Gedeo Zone in south central Ethiopia has been severely set back after more than 40 storehouses, washing stations and dry mills were damaged during fighting amongst different ethnic groups in the region in 2017. The damage to washing stations has forced many farmers to naturally dry their crop in the sun instead of following the washing process typical of the region.
Unfortunately, the fighting has displaced more than 800,000 people and escalated to the point where on July 24, 2018, the United States announced $170M in humanitarian assistance to displaced people in the region. New coffee shipments from Ethiopia are expected in the fall of 2018, but due to the unrest we cannot guarantee that we will be fortunate enough to get more coffee from the Gedeo Zone.
What Makes This Coffee So Beautiful?
This is by far one of the best coffees we have ever cupped and stands out above all the other naturally processed Ethiopians we have sampled. We roasted this coffee lightly to bring out its natural fruitiness and think we hit a home run. Once you open this bag, the overwhelming aroma of blueberries will overtake your senses, which is why we call it “Blueberry Blast.”
